I received word via IRC (#L4D on Gamesurge.net) at 7:45 PM EST that the timeless CAL had possibly gone down the tubes. KevinD of CAL said the following at 8 PM EST: "All CAL staff have been locked out of the site by the new owner and CAL and its leagues sit in limbo. All matches MUST NOT BE PLAYED. They are on hold until further notice. We have no idea if/when it will return." At 8 PM EST, KevinD had said that Scott Valencia was the new owner of CAL but Complexity's CEO and Founder laid this to rest at 8:13 PM EST: "Many threads and rumors have popped up today about CAL and a possible ownership change with Scott Valencia in control. Just to put those rumors to rest, I spoke with Scott today and he's very confused why his email and phone are both blowing up. He asked that I make a post to let people know he is in no way involved with CAL at this time." And Murdock of CAL said the following at 8:31 PM EST: "As everyone knows, CAL was purchased by a middle-eastern media company. Part of the agreement was that all admins would be fired upon transfer of the league. Right now the ten servers that the CAL database has been located on has been moved to one server in Germany and the admins have been locked out of the league."
In a GotFrag thread questioning the truth of CAL's supposed demise, Angel Munoz (or someone pretending to be him) said: "CAL and AVault.com are down because of a database error due to mechanical failure. Fortunately, the CAL database was successfully transferred to its new host in the UK and should be back up within 12 hours."
In another thread, a user by the name AOD_TRAPT said: "A few weeks ago the acquisition was finalized and this weekend we have commenced the process of transferring CAL to new host servers in the United Kingdom. While we are hoping for minimum interruption to CAL operations, it is likely that you will experience downtime while trying to access the CAL website. Please bear with us as we complete the transfer process to the new owners." We do not know the source of this information.
Likewise, it has been reported that Garett Picchioni is the new CAL Network Operations Manager. Picchioni is reported to have said "Caleague.com is going to version 4.0: introducing new anti-cheat service and providing a pay-for-play league." Once again we do not know the source of this information.
The following was posted on the official CAL front page (some people can access it, others cannot (based on location)):
" Update on CAL's Acquisition
On March 6, 2009 it will be eight years since we launched the online league named Cyberathlete Amateur League, or CAL. As previously announced, CAL was sold to the newly formed CPL Holdings Group, LTD., of the United Arab Emirates.
A few weeks ago the acquisition was finalized and this weekend we have commenced the process of transferring CAL to new host servers in the United Kingdom. While we are hoping for minimum interruption to CAL operations, it is likely that you will experience downtime while trying to access the CAL website.
Please bear with us as we complete the transfer process to the new owners. "
Stay tuned for the latest on this exciting development. Someone has already made a video about Hitler being angry about the CAL situation, check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYCYd3DsFNM&fmt=22
